A narrower follow-up, since the general answer is now clear:
What training is actually for during a large deficit, because framing it as calorie burn sets people up to quit when the arithmetic disappoints them?

I read this differently from RegAffairsDC, on substance rather than tone. The counter-case has not been addressed. Somebody upthread described the situation that does not fit, and the thread moved on rather than engaging with it, which is the failure mode this board is supposed to avoid.
I would rather be corrected than agreed with, if it comes to it.

Adding the clinical framing, because it changes how the question reads. It is worth asking what the claim would look like if it were false. If nothing would look different, it is not a claim about the world and no amount of discussion will settle it.
