The honest answer is that the effect is real, the magnitude is contested, and the individual variation is larger than either.

Can confirm. Same sequence, different timescale. The detail I would add is minor and it is already implied above.

Coming at TrialTracker_MD’s question from a different direction. The useful move here is to separate what is established from what is widely repeated. Those two sets overlap less than the confident tone of most write-ups suggests, and the second set is where nearly all the disagreement on this board comes from.

Ask again with the specifics and you will get a better answer than this one.

The figures, for anyone assembling their own picture. One habit that pays for itself: post the method alongside the number. A figure without its method cannot be checked, and an unchecked figure is how this community accumulates folklore.

Following on from TrialTracker_MD — and this may be the naive question:

How would you tell the difference between that and the alternative explanation?

Filing a mild objection. Mild because I might be wrong; an objection because nobody has addressed the case that does not fit. Filing an objection on the n=1 problem. Personal experience is genuine evidence about one person and very weak evidence about anybody else, and this thread keeps promoting the first into the second.
