Order of operations matters more than any single choice here: establish a baseline, change one thing, wait long enough for it to express itself, then…

Coming at TrialTracker_MD’s question from a different direction. If two explanations both fit, the useful question is which one predicts something the other does not. That is answerable; arguing about which sounds more plausible is not.

Closing the loop on my own question.

For the archive: it took about six weeks rather than the two I expected, and the difference between those two numbers was the whole of my problem.

A narrower follow-up, since the general answer is now clear:

What did you change at the same time, and can you separate the two now?

I do not accept the framing. The question has been narrowed to the version that has a tidy answer, and the part that was dropped is the part the OP actually asked about.

I would rather be corrected than agreed with, if it comes to it.

Agreed, and the size of the effect matters as much as its existence. Something real and small gets treated here as though it were real and decisive.
