If you are comparing against somebody else’s result, check that you are comparing the same measurement taken the same way.

That reframing is the part I needed. Sending this to two other people who asked me the same thing last week.

Adding the clinical framing, because it changes how the question reads. There is a difference between no evidence and evidence of no effect, and this subject is one where the two get swapped freely in both directions.

I would rather be corrected than agreed with, if it comes to it.

Adding a me-too, because a thread of one person's experience is not much use. Posting only so the count is not one.

There is a second half to this that has not been said yet. It helps to say which part of this you are uncertain about. A precise question gets a precise answer; a general one gets everybody’s favourite anecdote.

That is the short version; the long version is somebody else's post.

Adding the numbers, since they settle part of this. One habit that pays for itself: post the method alongside the number. A figure without its method cannot be checked, and an unchecked figure is how this community accumulates folklore.
