A sustained drop to 1,100 or 1,200 calories reliably under-delivers a predictable set: B12, vitamin D, iron, folate, zinc and magnesium.

Vitamin and mineral labs to check while on micronutrients — my doctor orders these quarterly:

  • B12: Can drop due to reduced GI absorption. Mine went from 650 to 380 — now supplementing.
  • Iron/Ferritin: Reduced food intake = reduced iron. Ferritin dropped from 67 to 24. Supplementing.
  • Vitamin D: Was already low (18 ng/mL), now taking 5000 IU daily.
  • Folate: Stable, no issues.
  • Zinc: Slightly low, added a multivitamin with zinc.

Nutritional deficiencies are a real risk when you're eating significantly less. Don't skip your labs!

Following on from Dr.ReproEndo — and this may be the naive question:

How would you tell the difference between that and the alternative explanation?

Adding the part of the answer the thread has not reached. Worth answering the question that was asked rather than the one behind it. The narrow version usually has an answer; the broad version usually does not, and answering the broad one is how a thread stops being useful.

Reporting back.

Following up because I said I would. I changed one thing, left everything else alone, and waited the full interval before looking. It resolved, and I cannot prove which half of that did it.

Agreed, with the usual condition: that holds for the average and this board is a collection of individuals. A population claim and a personal prediction are different things and get quoted interchangeably.

If somebody has the primary source to hand I would rather cite it than paraphrase it.
